Dubai’s private school sector is updating its teacher rules and requirements, effective September 2025, under the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). These changes aim to improve teacher quality, ensure compliance, and reduce mid-year staff turnover.

KHDA Teacher Qualifications

All private school teachers must meet KHDA-approved qualifications and relevant teaching experience:

  • New teachers: Must have recognized degrees, teaching certificates, and relevant experience.
  • Existing teachers: Must comply by September 2028 (ongoing schools) or April 2029 (schools starting in April).
  • Appointment Notice: Every teacher requires a KHDA-issued approval to work at a specific school. This is non-transferable between schools.

Schools must conduct strict background checks before hiring:

  • Two professional references, including the most recent employer
  • Criminal background checks from all countries lived in
  • Online presence verification
  • CV, degree, and qualification verification
  • Interviews with safeguarding-trained panel members

KHDA accepts degrees from accredited UAE universities, recognized foreign branches, and internationally accredited institutions.

90-Day Resignation Rule

Teachers who resign mid-term without completing all exit requirements must wait 90 days before receiving a new Appointment Notice. This prevents sudden teacher exits and ensures continuity in student learning.

Deregistration for Misconduct

Teachers can be deregistered for serious misconduct, including:

  • Criminal convictions
  • Child protection violations
  • Gross professional misconduct
  • Repeated dishonesty or culturally insensitive actions
